It is important to understand that anxiety, panic attacks, OCD and phobias ARE NOT illnesses. They are NEITHER physical nor mental illnesses. They are behavioral conditions and are as a result of an adjustment in the subconscious mind located in the Amygdala.
The Amygdala, similar to light switch, is either anxiety OFF or anxiety ON and in normal circumstances is only triggered when a threat of REAL danger exists. In anxiety conditions, the 'anxiety switch' gets artificially stuck in the ON position. This causes constant anxiety symptoms even when no REAL danger exists.
TRUE anxiety ONLY exists when there is actually something present to be afraid or frightened of!
If you have feelings of anxiety when nothing threatening is present, you are definately not experiencing TRUE anxiety.
What you are actually experiencing is a malfunction or misfiring of the Amygdala, NOT actual true fear! This causes varying symptoms and sensations, such as anxiety and panic attacks, which are simply reactions to an over-stimulated and anxious mind. This in turn causes an 'anxiety disorder'.
The term 'disorder 'suggests an illness, which is why it is better to refer to anxiety disorders as 'conditions'. Your anxiety is not an illness or a disorder and it certainly does not require a doctor. So how do these changes occur?
These changes are not very difficult to make and will always happen subconsciously!
No person consciously 'wants' them to happen.
This happens as a result of a process called Operant Conditioning.
The best example of Operant Conditioning is a scientific experiment carried out called 'Pavlov's Dogs'.
Pavlov rang a bell when feeding his dogs. Eventually the dogs would salivate just by Pavlov ringing the bell... through the power of suggestion and conditioning the mental link was made by the dogs between BELL and FOOD. The ringing of the bell was communicating directly with the dog's subconscious mind and produced a physical reaction! It's a bit like someone salivating when someone suggests they should suck a lemon. Even though there is no lemon present, the suggestion in itself is enough to make your mouth water.
Try it yourself; picture a cold juicy lemon in your mind, can you imagine the smell ? Now imagine it in your hand and then biting into it as the juice flows across your tongue! Did it make you salivate? Most people do. You see, even through the power of suggestion, it is possible to make your mouth water... can you now see how efficiently suggestions can cause a reaction?
Anxiety is conditioned in precisely the same way. We become 're-programed' and directly respond, having anxiety and panic attacks even when it is inappropriate. We experience panic attacks, anxiety attacks, phobias, obsessions and many other physical and psychological manifestations of anxiety. We have now become reprogramed to experience anxiety all the time... what a living nightmare!
This is the main reason why we react so adversely to the slightest thing with anxiety, panic attacks, phobias and other symptoms, it's why your life becomes dominated by high anxiety and you feel no longer able to cope like you used to.
